Kanye West’s Sunday Service just got even more VVVIP.
The controversial rapper is set to stage his weekly concert-style church worship at Coachella on Easter Sunday.
West’s announcement came as a shock, after he pulled out of headlining the Californian festival days before the line-up was revealed, citing a “creative conflict” when organisers refused to accommodate his vision of performing in a custom-made “dome”.
But it seems all is forgiven … with West saying his late-addition to the bill “was confirmed last night”.
“We’d like to make an announcement that we’ve just booked another show. We will be doing Sunday Service, sunrise, at Coachella,” West said today.
Billed as “Kanye West’s Sunday Service”, the rapper’s one-off “sunrise” performance will be held at 9am on Sunday, April 21, during Coachella’s second weekend, the festival confirmed.
West’s Sunday Services have featured guest performers including Kid Cudi, DMX and 070 Shake, and been attended by the Kardashian-Jenner family, as well as celebrities including Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, Courtney Love and Tyler the Creator.
The invitation-only services feature gospel-style versions of West’s songs, with performers dressed head-to-toe in his clothing label, Yeezy, along with a Yeezy-themed lemonade stand selling $300 sneakers.
“We were out in Palm Springs and they took us to a little campground, because we were thinking about a little performance in Palm Springs, just a little one,” West told his Sunday Service crowd today.
“Then they had a mountain, he had a mountain waiting for us.
“He had a date waiting for us. Only one date that mountain would be available to us: Easter Sunday at Coachella.
“That confirmation was confirmed last night.”
West reportedly pulled out of headlining Coachella days before the line-up was announced, after organisers denied his request to build a “dome” in the middle of the festival’s grounds.
The dome, which organisers deemed “impossible” to accommodate, was set to feature “hi-tech production and immersive video” and feature West performing in the round, according to Rolling Stone.
Organisers said the entire Coachella layout — including port-a-loos — would have had to be resigned to fit West’s vision.
Ariana Grande signed on to replace the Fade rapper, with tickets to both Coachella weekends selling out in six hours.
